Kitchen Remodel
Remodeling Need
With two young children and a love for hosting, these homeowners needed a more open and functional layout for everyday living and entertaining. While they wanted to expand the feel of the space, it was important that the exterior remain unchanged—no relocating windows or doors.
They own mid-century modern furnishings and sought a timeless, transitional design that would complement their style. Preserving the existing brick wall that connects the family room and kitchen was also a priority.
Over time, different hardwood floors had been installed throughout the home, along with tile in the foyer and hallway, resulting in a disjointed look. They wanted to unify the flooring with new white oak hardwood in the foyer and hallway, using turn boards to subtly define rooms while maintaining an open, cohesive flow.
They also chose to donate their existing dark cherry cabinetry to Habitat for Humanity, reflecting their thoughtful approach to the renovation.
Solution
To create the open, connected layout the homeowners envisioned, our design team removed the walls separating the dining room and family room from the kitchen. Because the existing wall was structural and housed electrical and HVAC ductwork, the space required careful re-engineering. These systems were seamlessly integrated into a new structural beam concealed in the ceiling and in the structural post connected to the island—allowing the layout to open dramatically while maintaining structural integrity.
The redesigned kitchen reflects a timeless transitional aesthetic that complements the homeowners’ mid-century modern furnishings. Cabinetry from the Wellborn Premium Series in a Gray Mist painted finish (Breckenridge door style) provides clean lines and subtle warmth. Absolute Black granite countertops in a leathered finish add texture and depth, while Zellige Antique Sage ceramic tile wraps the backsplash and window wall, bringing soft color and artisanal character to the space.
Functionality was thoughtfully layered into the design. A built-in pantry and dedicated coffee and tea station sit adjacent to the refrigerator, with a continuation of the countertop beneath the window to create a convenient grab-and-go area for the kids. The kitchen features a stainless steel workstation sink with a brushed brass pull-down faucet and air-switch garbage disposal for ease of use. An under-cabinet range hood maintains a streamlined appearance while the island features a functional microwave drawer.
Select appliances, including the refrigerator and dishwasher, were reused to preserve budget efficiency while integrating seamlessly into the refreshed design.
Result
The renovation transformed a once-segmented layout into a bright, cohesive space designed for modern family living. By removing structural barriers and reworking key systems, the kitchen, dining, and family rooms now flow seamlessly together—creating the openness the homeowners wanted without altering the exterior.
New white oak hardwood flooring unifies the main level, while the preserved brick wall adds warmth and character. The redesigned kitchen balances timeless style with everyday functionality, supporting both entertaining and busy family routines in a space that feels larger, lighter, and beautifully connected.
