Remodeling Need

The homeowners reached out to Schroeder seeking a comprehensive update to better align their home with how they live today. Beyond an exterior that needed attention, the kitchen, basement, and bathroom all felt dated and no longer functional. Additionally, the existing rambler layout lacked the space and flow they needed, prompting a desire to reconfigure and expand for improved comfort and livability.

Design Solution

Our design team began by introducing a 183-square-foot bump-out addition to expand the family room and dramatically enhance the home’s sense of space. By incorporating vaulted ceilings, the new family room feels open, airy, and filled with natural light.

The true ingenuity of the design lies in how the addition reshaped both interior flow and exterior connection. Two sliding doors provide seamless access to both the rear yard and the front porch, creating a natural circular flow through the home. What was once a small front stoop was thoughtfully transformed into a full, welcoming porch that wraps around and connects directly to the new family room addition, beautifully tying the front elevation to the expanded living space.

Careful material selections played a key role in elevating both performance and curb appeal. The new sliding doors are Andersen 100 Series, finished in a custom satin nickel finish. The Thermatru front entry door features satin etched privacy glass, thoughtfully selected to provide discretion from the semi-busy road while still allowing natural light. It was painted in Benjamin Moore’s AF-290 Caliente in an eggshell finish, creating a bold, welcoming focal point.

The exterior was fully refreshed with CertainTeed Pacific Blue CedarBoards insulated lap siding, enhancing both energy efficiency and architectural depth. Accent gable ends were detailed with CertainTeed 7” straight-edge shingles in Savannah Wicker, adding texture and contrast. The majority of the roofing package features CertainTeed Landmark Pro architectural shingles in Max Def Weathered Wood, while the new front porch is crowned with Trex decking and a classic bronze metal roof, providing durability and visual distinction.

Crisp white trim is complemented by 6” K-style white aluminum gutters, creating a clean, refined finish that ties the updated materials together for a cohesive, polished look.

Result

The transformation redefined both the character and functionality of the home. The expanded family room now feels bright, open, and effortlessly connected to the outdoors, while the vaulted ceilings create a sense of volume that the original rambler layout simply couldn’t offer. The new circular flow, linking the front porch, family room, and rear yard, enhances everyday living and makes entertaining feel natural and seamless.

From the street, the home now presents a cohesive and architecturally intentional façade. The bold front door, layered siding textures, and refined roofing details elevate curb appeal while maintaining warmth and approachability. What was once a dated exterior and confined interior now feels spacious, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed for modern living.

The result is not just an addition, but a home that feels larger, brighter, and beautifully connected inside and out.
