Kitchen and Great Room Remodel Designed for Accessibility in Kings Park, Fairfax, VA

Remodeling Need

As part of a larger whole-home remodel, this Fairfax homeowner set out to reimagine the kitchen as a central space that could better support both everyday living and frequent entertaining.

With a strong focus on sustainability, he prioritized reusing materials wherever possible and minimizing overall waste throughout the project. The kitchen design needed to reflect that mindset while still delivering a highly functional, updated space.

As an active host who frequently welcomes large gatherings, the kitchen needed to open seamlessly to the great room, creating an easy flow for connection and taking full advantage of the expansive lake views.

Design Solution

As part of a first-floor bump-out that added significant livable space, the home was expanded to include a new great room with expansive lake views, along with a bedroom or study and an accessible bathroom designed for aging in place.

The existing kitchen was fully reconfigured to improve flow, increase storage, and create a stronger connection to the great room. A pantry closet was added, and the former living room was repurposed into a dining space suited for hosting.

Nearby, the storage area was transformed into a mudroom and laundry space, bringing these functions from the basement to the main level. The powder room was updated, and a new garage entry improved accessibility and overall circulation.

The kitchen design balances performance with sustainability. Durable white engineered quartz countertops in Silestone Ethereal Glow offer lasting appeal, paired with a classic ceramic subway tile backsplash and maple Wellborn cabinetry in a warm caramel finish. A workstation sink with integrated accessories enhances everyday function, while stainless steel appliances, including an induction range and hood, modernize the space. The existing dishwasher was reused in support of the homeowner’s sustainability goals.

Result

The result is a cohesive kitchen and great room designed for both everyday living and gathering. Improved flow, thoughtful material selections, and a stronger connection to the lake views create a space that feels open, functional, and inviting.
