Sunrooms & Porches
Remodeling Need
This project began with the need to create a comfortable retreat for smoking cigars, separate from the main home. The vision expanded to include a cozy space where the entire family could commune with nature or gather with friends, even enjoying a movie on the outdoor screen mounted on the rear wall.
Design Solution
We designed an exclusive three-season retreat for our client and his friends providing a serene and sophisticated escape for enjoying cigars in style. This unique space offers the sensation of being suspended among the trees, complete with a breathtaking fifteen-foot ceiling that makes the sky quite literally the limit. The clean, minimalist lines of the retreat perfectly reflect the family’s commitment to simple, elegant living.
We enhanced the existing structure’s functionality by creating a new path and access to the patio and rear yard below. The staircase, resembling a spiral sculpture, provides a direct route to the outdoors from the second level of this contemporary ranch-style home. This thoughtful addition allows the homeowners to reach the patio and yard without having to go inside to walk down to the ground level.
This remodel was intentionally designed to blend seamlessly with the home’s original architecture, using a combination of composite decking and cedar. Superior craftsmanship is showcased through the meticulous use of raw wood, with expert precision ensuring every cut is perfect. We also extended the home’s original roofline into the new space, creating a cohesive and harmonious look that enhances the overall architectural aesthetic.
Challenges
One innovative construction method in this project was installing the screen while suspended 26 feet above unstable ground, which prevented scaffolding use. The team creatively balanced and stabilized a ladder, with one man focusing on the ladder and the other installing the 15-foot screen.
Another challenge was managing water drainage on the flat roofs, where gravity alone was insufficient. The solution was a strategically placed scupper drain to direct water away from the home.
Result
The clients are thrilled with their new three-season porch and report spending more time enjoying it than they ever imagined. Clearly, three seasons aren’t enough, as they planned to add a gas fireplace for the winter months.
