Bathroom Remodel
Remodeling Need
These Falls Church homeowners came to us through a referral as they were entering a new phase of life. With their adult son moving out, they were ready to reimagine their home and create a space that better fit their needs as empty nesters.
Along with transforming their kitchen, the homeowners also hoped to breathe new life into their dated primary bathroom. The space was overwhelmed by a large corner tub and bulky built-in shelving that wasted precious square footage. A cramped diagonal shower and an exposed toilet area lacked both privacy and practicality, and the combination of scattered lighting and multiple skylights created an unbalanced, overly bright environment. The existing double vanity and makeup station added to the room’s dated feel and were overdue for a refresh.
They hoped to transform their primary bathroom within the existing footprint—removing outdated features, improving the layout, and introducing updated finishes and a contemporary aesthetic that would make the space feel more refined, efficient, and inviting.
Design Solution
The primary bathroom was completely redesigned within the existing footprint, including relocating the door to create a more functional layout and additional wall space.
Because the vaulted ceilings in the adjoining bedroom sat on load-bearing walls within the bathroom, we were limited in the structural changes we could make. We removed the portions of wall that were feasible and relocated the entry door, infilling the original opening to create much-needed usable wall space.
To improve privacy and functionality, we added a new enclosed water closet on the left side of the room, complete with a bidet (and its own outlet), a linen closet for storage, and a pocket door—features the original layout lacked. Because of the existing skylights, the new ¾-height wall does not extend to the ceiling, preserving natural light while still defining the space.
Stepping into the room, we designed a double floating vanity using Wellborn Aspire’s Lux Series cabinetry in Full Access Maple, finished in a warm Ginger stain with a clean, flush door style. Above the vanity, we installed a combined mirror-and-lighting system for a seamless, modern look. All plumbing and hardware feature polished chrome finishes to enhance the bathroom’s refined aesthetic.
To the right of the vanity, we created a luxurious wet room featuring a half wall and a curved glass panel that defines the shower area while maintaining an open, spa-like feel. Inside the wet room, we installed a freestanding tub and tub faucet alongside both a handheld and standard showerhead for versatility and comfort. A custom hinged glass shower door with matching panels completes the enclosure.
We also added blocking in the walls behind the freestanding tub to allow for a grab bar without compromising the design. For built-in convenience, the shower includes a recessed storage niche on the opposite wall, along with a corner shelf designed specifically for shaving and everyday essentials.
For additional privacy, we applied a tempered frosted film to the existing window, preserving natural light while ensuring comfort.
Result
The completed renovation transformed this Falls Church home into a more open, functional, and beautifully refined living environment tailored to the homeowners’ next chapter as empty nesters.
In the primary bathroom, what had been an awkward, outdated layout is now a serene retreat featuring improved privacy, a luxurious wet room with a freestanding tub, a floating double vanity with integrated lighting, and thoughtfully layered finishes that create a spa-like experience.
Every design choice—from cabinetry and countertops to lighting, tile, and functional details—was made to enhance comfort, efficiency, and long-term livability. The result is a cohesive, contemporary transformation that feels brighter, more welcoming, and perfectly suited to the homeowners’ evolving lifestyle.
