Stunning Slabs and Large Format Tiles
Slab tiles, also known as large format tiles, are a contemporary and versatile choice for enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. They are referred to as slab tiles for their large size and thin profile. Large format tiles typically measure 12” x 24”, or more, and offer a seamless, sophisticated appearance with fewer grout lines.
Types of Slab Tiles:
Porcelain Slab Tiles. A popular choice for their durability, stain resistance and minimal water absorption. Choose from a variety of finishes including polished, matte and textured to mimic the look of natural stone, concrete, wood and more. These tiles are commonly used for kitchen countertops, bathroom walls and large flooring areas.
Ceramic Slab Tiles. Like porcelain, ceramic slab tiles offer a wide array of finishes and designs. While they are generally less durable and absorbent than porcelain, they are still suitable for walls and some flooring applications, or can be used to create striking feature walls in living spaces or in wet areas like bathrooms.
Natural Stone Slab Tiles. Made from natural stone such as marble, granite or travertine, slab tiles provide a luxurious, timeless aesthetic. Available in a range of colors, veining patterns and texture, they are often chosen for kitchen islands, fireplace surrounds and bathroom countertops.

Types of Large Format Tiles:
Porcelain Large Format Tiles. Porcelain is widely used for large format tiles due to its durability, low water absorption and resistance to stains and scratches. Like porcelain slab tiles, they can resemble natural stone, wood or concrete, and are available in a variety of finishes.
Ceramic Large Format Tiles. With a broad range of designs and finishes, ceramic large format tiles are often used for indoor applications for select flooring options or large feature walls.
Other Considerations When Choosing Tile
When choosing your ideal tiles for your home, several considerations should guide your decision-making process.
Sustainability. In today’s world, sustainability is an increasingly important consideration for environmentally-conscious homeowners. Look for tiles made from recycled materials, such as recycled glass or post-consumer ceramic to reduce waste and environmental impact. Additionally, consider tiles manufactured using eco-friendly production methods, and those with low VOC emissions to help maintain indoor air quality.
Material Selection. The type of tile material makes a difference. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are among the most popular choices due to their durability, versatility and low maintenance requirements. Ceramic tiles are best for walls and less demanding floor areas, while porcelain tiles, which are denser and more durable, are more suited for high-traffic flooring. Natural stone tiles, like marble, granite or travertine may be timeless, but require more maintenance.
Grout Choices. The color and type of grout can greatly impact the final tiled surface design. For a subtle, seamless look, consider grout that closely matches the tile color. Alternatively, contrasting grout can highlight the tile pattern and layout, adding a decorative element. Epoxy grout is durable and stain resistant, and good for high-traffic areas and wet spaces; regular grout is more porous and prone to staining, but can be sealed to enhance its durability.
Size and Layout. Large format tiles can create a spacious and contemporary appearance, with fewer grout lines, while smaller tiles can introduce intricate and decorative patterns. Herringbone, chevron or basket weave layouts add visual interest. To choose the best option, consider your space size, architectural elements, and the overall design concept.
Slip Resistance. In areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens and outdoor spaces, slip resistance is a safety consideration. Look for tiles with slip-resistant surfaces or a high coefficient of friction (COF) rating to help reduce accidents due to slips and falls. This is especially important when children, elderly individuals or those with mobility concerns are concerned.
Let’s Talk about Surfaces: Surfaces We Love
Homeowners often gravitate toward a variety of tile surfaces due to the distinct qualities and benefits of each, in alignment with their design preferences, functional requirements and budgets. Here are some of the most popular tile surfaces and why homeowners love them:
Quartz Surfaces. Quartz surfaces are engineered stone tiles made from a blend of natural quartz crystals and resins. They are appreciated for their durability, stain resistance and uniform appearance. Being non-porous, they are highly resistant to staining and ideal for high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Choose from a wide range of colors and patterns.
Granite Surfaces. Granite surfaces are renowned for their natural beauty, durability and heat resistance. Formed from igneous rock, they featured unique veining and patterns. Homeowners love granite for its high-end appearance and exceptional longevity, and use it often in kitchens and bathrooms, particularly for countertops.
Marble Surfaces. Marble surfaces are extracted from metamorphic rock and feature stunning veining and patterns. Its luxurious aesthetic and timeless appeal make marble a popular choice for bathroom vanities, fireplaces and decorative accents, even though it requires more care to prevent staining and etching due to its softer nature.
Wood and Butcher Block Surfaces. The inviting appearance of wood in kitchens and dining rooms offers a warm, natural look that can soften the overall aesthetics of a space. Butcher block surfaces are especially popular for countertops and island tops due to their durability and food preparation suitability.
Quartzite Surfaces. Quartzite is a natural stone that combines the durability of granite with the intricate patterns and colors of marble. Homeowners love its durability, and resistance to etching and staining, making it a practical choice for kitchen countertops.
Concrete Surfaces. Concrete surfaces have gained popularity for their industrial and minimalist aesthetics. They are versatile for both indoor and outdoor applications and are often used for countertops, floors and walls, providing a modern, urban look appealing to those seeking a contemporary design.
Porcelain Surfaces. Available in a variety of finishes and styles including wood-look, stone-look, and concrete-look options, porcelain surfaces are highly versatile. They are durable, moisture resistant and easily maintained, and used extensively for floors, walls and backsplashes, especially in high-traffic areas.
Solid Surface Surfaces. Made from acrylic, polyester or a blend of both, solid surfaces are popular choices for a seamless, low-maintenance look for bathroom vanities and countertops. These surfaces are non-porous, hygienic, and come in a variety of colors and patterns.
Design Trends for Surfaces
Surface design trends are constantly evolving, offering homeowners and designers creative options for enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of their spaces. Here are some of the latest in tile trends in surface design.
Combining Materials. One of the prominent trends in surface design is the artful combination of different materials. By blending contrasting textures, colors and finishes, homeowners and designers can create personal and visually captivating spaces. For example, combining wood and stone, or metal and glass can add depth and character to interiors.
Waterfall Edges. Waterfall edges are a design feature where the surface material continues vertically over the side of a countertop or island in a seamless cascade. This creates a striking and contemporary look that emphasizes the material’s quality. These features are often seen in kitchens and bathrooms, particularly on quartz, granite or marble countertops.
Unique Edges. Rather than conventional straight tops, why not opt for unique and custom-crafted edge profiles. Decorative edge options, such as bullnose, ogee or beveled edges, can add sophistication and individuality to surfaces.
Terrazzo. Terrazzo is a composite materials made of chips of marble, glass, quartz or other materials set in cement or resin. Its retro look, with a mix of colors and patterns, provides a touch of nostalgia in floors, countertops and backsplashes.
Mix and Match Tiles. Combine different tile sizes, shapes and colors to create intricate patterns and designs for backsplashes, bathroom walls and feature walls. This trend has been growing in popularity.
Natural Materials. We’re seeing a resurgence in natural materials such as wood, stone and concrete. Often used for countertops, floors and wall accents, natural materials are appreciated for their organic textures and earthy aesthetics.
Matte Finishes. Homeowners like the understated elegance of matte surfaces, which are more resistant to fingerprints and smudges compared to glossy finishes, and use these surfaces on countertops, tiles and cabinetry.
