Herndon, VA Kitchen Remodel: Transforming a Fireplace-Divided Living Space into an Open, Functional Layout

Remodeling Need

These Herndon, VA homeowners approached us with pre-drawn architectural plans, seeking a reliable contractor to bring their design vision to life. They had worked with an architect but were dissatisfied with the builder that had been recommended.

Additionally, the original layout of the homeowner’s living space featured an eat-in area, a fireplace, and a living room, all within one large room. However, the placement of the fireplace created an unintended division in the space, limiting the functional use of the dining area.

Solution

Upon reviewing the existing kitchen design plans, we discovered multiple issues with the cabinet layout, especially in relation to the appliances that the homeowners had already purchased. As a result, we worked closely with the client to completely overhaul the cabinet layout. While we kept the overall kitchen layout the same, we revised the exact cabinet configurations to accommodate their new appliances, which would not have fit with the original plan.

To resolve the client’s limited use of the dining area, we relocated the fireplace to an interior wall, creating a more cohesive flow and opening up the room into a spacious, continuous living area.

The kitchen features a custom-designed hood that serves as a striking focal point in the space, paired with elegant Wellborn cabinets, stunning Quartzite countertops, and a beautifully coordinated Ansax Tile backsplash. A Blanco sink and Kohler plumbing fixtures provide both style and functionality, completing the kitchen’s sophisticated design. The adjacent fireplace boasts a stacked stone ledger tile surround, framed by custom-built shelving and walnut-finished floating shelves, creating a warm and inviting living area.

Challenge

The original cabinetry that had been specified by the client’s architectural designer was a fully custom line with an extended lead time. To address this, we introduced her to Wellborn cabinetry, which offered a faster turnaround and a more cost-effective solution without sacrificing quality.

Result

The client was delighted with the new selections and finishes, which allowed for a smooth transition into the production phase. We also relocated the fireplace to better suit the kitchen’s updated layout, ensuring the entire space was both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
