Kitchen Remodel
Remodeling Need
These Burke, VA homeowners first came to Schroeder Design Build requesting a mudroom. The home was built in 1972, with an L-shaped kitchen and living room. To the clients, it seemed choppy, without the flow they desired, but they thought a mudroom would help.
After review of their layout, and with suggestions from Schroeder, they decided to ditch the mudroom idea to reconfigure their layout entirely. They chose instead a new floor plan with an updated kitchen.
Design Solution
In the redesigned first-floor layout, the kitchen was relocated to the front of the main level, while the rooms were seamlessly opened up to create a harmonious flow within the open concept design. The kitchen was enlarged to feature a huge island, with large, comfortable stools. An additional closet was added on the first floor for extra storage.
Features include:
- First floor layout flip
- Large, functional kitchen with abundant cabinetry and oversized island
- Stainless steel appliances
- Hardwood flooring
- Closet addition
Challenges
Because the kitchen was now in the front of the house, two challenges arose. First, the kitchen windows had to be functional as well as blend in with the existing architecture. As a result, the windows needed to be made slightly smaller. Another obstacle we encountered was arranging the client’s preexisting furniture within the newly created open concept dining and living room spaces.
Result
From thinking they just needed a mudroom, to an entire first and second floor remodel was a big leap for these Burke, VA homeowners, but in the end, they were completely satisfied with their decision. The remodel gave them the space, storage and flow they ultimately desired.
